Adopted by North America around the 17th Century, The Rustic Door was used more as a form of security than style. During the English “Middle Ages”, it was not uncommon for Soldiers and Thieves to raid homes and take valuable possessions such as food, livestock and personal affects. In response to these raids, a sturdy door comprised of heavy wood held together by vertical and horizontal planks was developed to protect the front door entrance and hold intruders at bay.
