The history of the Garage Door dates back to around 450 BC. At this time, the Roman Empire ruled the land and brought forth many technological advancements including gate houses. These gate houses contained steel doors that would slam shut to protect their chariots from theft and vandals. Fast forward to the 18th Century and the development of “Carriage Houses.” This outdoor shed/barn was completely covered to protect the horse and carriage from the elements. The major drawback, however, was that the shed doors swung outward, preventing easy access in winter snow. Enter the modern Garage. In 1921, C.G. Johnson invented the first operational overhead door and within 5 years of the debut, he invented the first electric overhead door.
