How to Change a Siliconed-On Door Sweep
- Open the door, and if you are able to reach your hand underneath the door, you can change the sweep without taking down the doors.
- Put down an old towel underneath the door to protect the floor.
- Pop off the old threshold by gently pulling down. If needed, gently pry on the sides of the door sweep with a thin padded chisel.
- Once the old sweep is removed, use it as a guide to cut the new sweep to the proper length and to trim the two interior fins in about an inch from both ends of the sweep.
- Apply the new sweep by running ONE tiny bead of black silicone down the center of the sweep and inserting the sweep into the grooves at the bottom of the door. More is not better. You do not want silicone to gush out and get all over your door.
- Let the sweep dry for 10 minutes before closing the door.
- Adjust the nosing screws in the threshold plate up or down a quarter turn to get a nice engagement between the threshold nosing and the door sweeps. You want it tight enough to keep out air, light, and insects; but not so tight that it tears the blades of the sweep when the door opens and closes. Keeping the threshold clean and free of sand and grit will also extend the life of the door sweeps.
