How to Change a Screwed On Door Sweep
- Set up (2) padded sawhorses. (Wrap some soft towels or blanket wrap on the tops of sawhorses- purchase at any home center)
- Take down the door by unscrewing one side of the hinges. Lay the door across the padded sawhorses.
- Clean the threshold well while the door is down.
- Remove the old sweep by unscrewing the screws (if needed), and gently prying loose the silicone bead that is holding the sweep on.
- Apply the new sweep by running a tiny bead of clear silicone down the sweep and inserting the sweep into the grooves at the bottom of the door.
- Let dry for 10 minutes before standing the door back up and screwing back onto the hinges.
- Adjust the saddle screws in the threshold plate up or down a quarter turn to get a nice engagement between the threshold and the door sweeps. You want it tight enough to keep out air and insects; but not so tight that it tears the blades of the sweep when the door opens and closes. Keeping the threshold clean and free of sand and grit will also extend the life of the door sweeps.
