How to Raise, Replace, or Shim a Masterpiece Threshold Nosing

A Threshold Nosing is the brown vinyl uppermost piece of adjustable material on the threshold that has a screw every 8” and is directly underneath the door.

  • The goal on the threshold nosing is to have a nice engagement between the nosing and the door sweep (the brown vinyl blades attached to the bottom of the door). It should be tight enough to keep out air, light, and insects, but not so tight that it produces friction and tears the blades of the door sweep off.
  • To adjust the nosing, use a manual Philips head screw driver (NOT A SCREW GUN) to apply a quarter turn to each screw and it will raise the threshold nosing to a higher position. The more turns you give the screws, the higher the nosing will raise. The nosing can be adjusted to raise up a full half inch.
  • Do NOT use a screw gun to turn the screws in the nosing piece. This will torque the screws, strip the screws, and potentially cause the vinyl nosing piece to crack from too much pressure. If you strip a screw, it can be replaced at any Ace Hardware or home center.
  • If the nosing is raised to the highest position, we advise completely removing the nosing and shimming underneath it with thin blocks of poplar or oak (or any hard wood) to prevent the threshold nosing from having a bouncy feel when it is stepped on, and to prevent it from cracking, particularly in cold weather, or if something heavy crosses over it.
  • To completely replace the Nosing with a new Nosing piece, remove the old Nosing piece by unscrewing each screw completely. Use the old nosing piece as a guide to cut the new Nosing piece to length. You will have to center the Nosing in the threshold and trim both ends to properly align the screws.
  • Replacements for Threshold Nosing can be ordered by calling Masterpiece Doors. Cost is approximately $100, including packaging and shipping. Production Lead time is approximately 2-3 weeks.
